Be careful what you click on! Even when using a trusted search engine like Google, many of the top paid results and even some of the organic results are links for downloads to malicious software!
How can you protect yourself? Before you download any free software, you should ask yourself: Do I need another video or music player? Do I really need to update my software? Am I attempting to download this software from a trusted source?
For example: If you need to update your Flash Player, the ONLY trusted source to download this software is from adobe.com or if you need to install iTunes for your PC, the ONLY trusted source to download this software is from apple.com.
If you search for itunes download in Google, you will see results to several links to viruses.
Use caution when installing free software! More often than not, so-called “free” software is actually just viruses and malware.
